Greetings Friends,

After a long winter away the Friends of Patterson Park Happy Hour is Back!

Please Join us Wednesday March 21 (next wed) from 6:00pm till close at
Baltimore's Newest Irish Pub, "Life of Reilly", conveniently located
right in Butchers Hill.  Many of you know this location as the old
Simon's.  The new owners have graciously agreed to host our first happy
hour fund raiser of the year and will be generously donating 20% of the
evenings proceeds directly to The Friends of Patterson Park.  Please
show your support for the park and this great new establishment by
inviting all your friends and colleagues and coming out for an evening
of good food, good drink, and great company.  Don't miss this
opportunity to see all your park friends from the volunteer teams who
you have been missing over the winter months!

Life of Reilly offers dinner and a drink in a comfortable, relaxing,
atmosphere within walking distance for many of us.  Their menu has been
expertly balanced with offerings ranging from traditional Fish & Chips
and Shepard's Pie, to Choice Steak and, my favorite, the Buffalo Chicken
Wrap.  Also keep an eye on the menu for interesting twists on your
favorites like Sweet Potato Fries!  Also of note is their Happy Hour
Specials: 4pm-7pm every day, ALL BEERS $2.00, House Wine and Premium
Rail drinks 1/2 price.  Thats right $2.00 Guinness pints, try to find
that at Power Plant!

If you still need an excuse don't forget that Tuesday is the first day
of Spring.  What better way to celebrate than with your friends from the
park over some post St. Patty's day Guinness and Harp.

So in summary here are the details:

When: Next Wednesday, 3-21-2007 6:00 till close
Where: 2031 East Fairmount Ave, Between Chester & Washington
Why: Raise money for a great organizaition (FoPP of course!) while
supporting a local business and having a great time

x-posted....Writing about Baltimore
I'm working on a novel set in Baltimore. Why? Not sure. I dont know anything at all about Baltimore.

My protagonist is a woman of both African American and white heritage, currently 30ish, who struggled to work her way through college and land a good job as a social worker. She had a rough beginning in her life, that is her Mom didnt live with her dad and was kind of flakey and irresponsible and very liberal, so its not necessary that she was born into low class but she probably experienced the hardships of poverty up and down throughout her childhood. Can anyone give me a clue as to the name of some neighborhoods she might have lived in, street names even, and the type of jobs she may have worked at while struggling to put herself through college?

Also, Id like to know the titles of any books someone might have read that are set in Baltimore that they think represents Baltimore fairly. Movies would be great, too.

And I hope this post conforms to the standards of this community.

Casino undergoing Renovation- not for park use
An email from the ED of Friends of Patterson Park:

Hello All -
Need some letter writers:

Well, the construction fence has gone up around the Casino.

The Commission on Aging is moving forward to turn the Casino into an adult day care facility for 54 clients, that is, seniors will be bussed into Patterson Park at 9AM to the Casino, activities inside the Casino will happen until 4:30 and then they are picked up and bussed back home, Mon-Fri. The Casino will not be open to the public. No weekend programs.

The Program is needed but is this the best facility for it or the best use for the Casino...in a public park this building will be used for only 54 seniors and will not be accessible by anyone else. The Casino was built in 1893 as a recreational areas for all ages; cards, dances, music, storytelling, games for all.
We were hoping the Audubon Society would be allowed to use the Casino as an Environmental Educational Center, but this will not happen now.

Casino is a historic property and one would hope that this facility will remain historically accurate and aesthetic. The community has not seen plans nor has there been public dialogue. Patterson Park is going through a renaissance and the community is coming back to the park and a park of inclusive use for all ages - it is after all a public park. The new playground is for everyone, the pool for everyone, the Pagoda, fountain ,etc. Now the Casino is being remodeled into a care facility with limited use, without public dialogue and probably not with historic preservation in mind.

I hope you can write some words to any of the following expressing your views on the Casino. I believe the general public has lost a building.

Please forward onto anyone else you think would write a letter and to other board members...

Support the Friends of Patterson Park
If you are not familiar with the search engine www.goodsearch.com:
"GoodSearch is an Internet search engine with a simple concept and unique social mission. GoodSearch enables you to help fund any of hundreds of thousands of charities or schools through the simple act of searching the Internet."

The Friends of Patterson Park is now listed as one of the charities they support. If you go to the page and enter "the friends of patterson park" or "Patterson park" under "I'm supporting" money from each search that you do will go to the Friends.

Heck, even if you don't want to support the FOPP(and who wouldn't?), it's worth checking out the other charities they help.
